You should speak to our Student Engagement Team to understand whether an interruption is the right decision for you or whether we might be able to support you in better ways, such extensions to assessment deadlines, mitigation or access to specialist support such as counselling or learning support.
Yes, you need to formally notify us that you wish to interrupt your studies. Failure to attend your course is not classed as formal notification that you are interrupting your studies.

Only in exceptional circumstances, would we consider interrupting for longer than one academic year. If you wish to extend your interruption, then you should speak to our Student Engagement Team to discuss this in the first instance. Please note, that if you choose to extend for more than one academic year, it is likely that you will exceed the maximum period of registration for your course and might mean you only achieve an intermediate award.
Generally, an interruption applies for 12 months/one academic year however, the minimum period you can interrupt depends on how your course is structured and how your studies are funded. For example, you might be able to interrupt for one semester or two blocks of study.
Yes, the period you interrupt for is included in the maximum period of registration for your course.
Only in exceptional circumstances can you interrupt part-way through a unit. In these circumstances, you will have to restart those units on your return and complete all assessments for the unit, even after they have already been submitted.
No, you will not be charged fees for your course whilst you are on interruption and any fees paid will remain on your student account until you return. Please read our Tuition Fee Liability Information [PDF] and Tuition Fees Policy [PDF] for more detailed information on fees.
No, you cannot attend any classes, sit exams or submit assignments whilst on an interruption from your studies. However, if you have resits, we may allow you to complete these during interruption. This will be agreed with your course coordinator before you start your interruption.
Yes, whilst on interruption you will still have access to university systems, the campus and academic and support services however there will be some restrictions on accessing material from the library and other electronic resources.
You should seek advice from the International Office. If you do choose to interrupt, you will be required to leave the UK and return to your home country as we will be required to withdraw visa sponsorship. You will have to apply for a new CAS and visa before you can return to your studies.
When we your interruption is approved, we will confirm your return to studies date. Before you return, we will be in contact with you to ensure a smooth return to your studies.
