Shamarah Mathurin-Charles received the prize of Most Meritorious Student in MSc Biomedical Engineering in the second of the day’s two ceremonies at the Luton campus.

Her research project, entitled ‘Novel ß-casein nanocarriers as iron delivery systems for nutraceutical applications’, demonstrates that milk-derived proteins can be used for targeted delivery of supplements such as iron. Her report has already been submitted for publication.

The following eight graduate awards were also handed out during the day:

• Best MSc Project to Ankit
• Most Meritorious Student in MSc Environmental Management to Ewere Egede
• Most Meritorious Student in MSc Pharmacology to Stella Lawson
• Most Meritorious Student in MSc Biotechnology to Olanrewaju Akomolafe
• Francis Davies Prize to Melissa Redmond
• Manuel Alvarado Prize to Stella Razaei

The awards all came as part of the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½’s second day of November graduations, featuring graduates from the Faculty of Creative Arts, Technologies and Science, and the Faculty of Education and Sport.

The day also witnessed the graduation of students from the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½’s partner institution in Oman, .

The second ceremony of the day saw the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ confer a Professorship on Professor Dayou Li, Professor of Robotics.

Dr Geoffrey Copland CBE was made an Honorary Fellow for his outstanding services to the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½.

The Guest of Honour was Dr Lawrence McGinty, ITN’s former Chief Science and Health Correspondent, preceding his opening of the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½’s new state-of-the-art science labs later in the afternoon.

was awarded an Honorary Masters of Business Administration in recognition of his contribution to the life and the community of Luton, whilst, in the first ceremony, Jack Sapsworth MBE DL was made an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration for his outstanding contribution to fundraising and charity work.

Today’s awards-packed ceremonies followed on from yesterday’s graduations, which involved graduates from the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences.

Tomorrow will see comedian and former Minister of Universities and Science David Willetts pick up honorary degrees, bringing November 2014’s graduations to a close.
