‘The voice of the X Factor’, Peter Dickson, inspired ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ media students during a visit to the Luton campus this week.

The announcer and voice coach, who has been the voice behind a number of well-known TV shows including Britain’s Got Talent, All Star Family Fortunes and The Paul O’Grady Show, talked to students about his 37-year career and provided them with live demonstrations of his work.

“No matter what career you want to pursue after finishing ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½, it will take a lot of hard work and, above all, passion,” said Mr Dickson, who was joined at the lecture by Bedfordshire Vice Chancellor, Bill Rammell

“Once I finished my Psychology Degree at Queen’s ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ Belfast, I had the option of undertaking a Postgraduate course in that field, but I followed my passion and went to work in broadcasting.”

Renowned for his voiceover work in recent years, the former Melody Radio, now Magic FM, breakfast show host, became the youngest TV news presenter in the history of the BBC aged 17.

Professor Karen Randell, Head of Bedfordshire’s Media Arts and Production Department, added: "Peter Dickson's voice is so familiar that we felt we knew him already.

“It was fascinating to discover the behind-the-scenes preparation and work that is necessary to succeed as such a high profile performer in a very competitive Industry.

“Peter’s experience in media vocal work has been varied and he was well placed to not only entertain our students with his anecdotes and some demonstration work, but also to advise them on how our Industry works, and how they may best place themselves to appeal to production companies after they graduate."

The event was organised as part of the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½’s Media Junction Project, which aims to enhance students’ experience by creating opportunities to network across degree pathways in order to make films and create media content.
