ISPAR Conference 2019

The ISPAR conference was held on the 18th September 2019 and it showcased the cutting edge and impactful research our staff and students are leading on. With the theme of #ActiveCampus, the whole day was packed with high quality content and insight, with an exciting variety of topics and presentation formats.

Dr Angel Chater welcomed everyone with an overview of ISPAR, highlighting our current partners, stakeholders and funders. We then moved to an exciting keynote lecture from Dr Sophie Killer sharing her experiences within Premier League football and the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

This was followed by a series of oral presentations, 3-minute theses and poster presentations, with lots of time set aside for networking and movement as part of our #ActiveCampus project. Chris Long talked about the stabilisation in elite male rugby players during a single leg standing task and Dr Daniel Bailey on the acute effects of breaking up prolonged sedentary time on cardiovascular disease risk markers in adults with a spinal cord injury. Two of our postgraduate research students, Marsha Brierley and Abbie Bell then got those who weren’t already standing, up on their feet for a bit of ‘exercise snacking’ between sessions.

Other talks covered topics linked to our three research centres around pedagogy and physical education, health, wellbeing and behaviour change, and sports performance. An overview of all talks can be found in our programme book. Lots of organisations had stands to promote their work in the areas of sport and physical activity and we had great engagement with local community.

The event was another great success, with feedback telling us that staff, students, stakeholders and members of the public enjoyed the event. Thank you very much to everyone who contributed to the conference and those who attended – we will see you next year!
