Research Centres
The Institute for Research in Applicable Computing (IRAC) has five Research Centres which work in a coordinated way, concentrating on their own specialised fields, while sharing staff and expertise as required by the situation:
- Centre for Visualisation and Data Analytics (CVDA) is developing innovative technologies for visual data exploration, targeting Big Data, and in the deployment of novel technologies in real-world systems; this work focuses mostly on application areas in next-generation healthcare and the creative industries
- Centre for Robotics and Smart Information Systems Studies (RSS) is addressing the needs of the ageing population by developing assistive robots to support the everyday lives of senior citizens
- Centre for Sensing, Signals and Wireless Technology (SSWT) is promoting embedded wireless for delivering data anywhere and energy harvesting to help deliver a cleaner planet
- Mechanical Engineering and Energy Technology (MEET) focuses on those researches of mechanical systems with special interest in energy efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions.
- National Centre for Cyberstalking Research (NCCR) is leading the national debate on measures to address the perils of cyberstalking
The Institute also supports research in relevant areas of teaching and learning. At present, members of IRAC belong almost entirely to the School of Computer Science and Technology, which has in the region of 40 academic staff and research fellows – see Researchers
