About IRAC
Institute for Research in Applicable Computing
Director: Professor Dayou Li
The Institute has a strong record in collaborative research with academic partners at Oxford, Imperial College, UCL, Warwick, Sheffield, King's College, Stanford, UPenn, ETHZ, EPFL and many others, both in the UK and overseas. The collaborations are mainly sponsored by external funds. IRAC has led and has been engaged in multiple research projects with funding from bodies such as the European Commission, EPSRC, RAEng and Leverhulme Trust, generating a total of over 拢5 million research income. IRAC also celebrated its first EC H2020 success in 2015.
The Institute supports research links with industry and has had a wide range of research and development projects with companies, including Google, AMD, Huawei, NVIDIA, Maxeler and local SMEs that are mainly funded by EPSRC CASE and KTP awards.
All of IRAC's activities reflect the strong motivation within the Institute for developing novel applications of computer technology to solve real-world problems and for providing innovative tools to enable users to employ computer technology more efficiently and more effectively. Some active research areas include:
- Management of Big Data by the use of visual analytics, web services and web semantics, and innovative applications of such techniques in healthcare and the creative industries.
- Use of novel technologies in healthcare and lifestyle management, particularly in the context of mHealth.
- Applications of artificial intelligence in robotics and autonomous control to support independent living.
- Sustainable construction and zero carbon solutions
- Visual signal processing (image, video and multiple view video processing).
- Nano-techniques for biomedicine and manufacturing.
- Energy harvesting.
- Advanced networking and telecommunications.
IRAC also hosts a range of seminars which reflect the research and teaching interests and are presented by Institute members and invited speakers from institutions both in the UK and abroad.
