Summary:

My study looks into the experiences of people who show symptoms of Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) to understand the connection between problematic/excessive gaming, stress, and mental health. Unlike most studies that use quantitative approaches, this research uses a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews. This helps get detailed insights into the emotions and psychology of individuals

Motivated by ongoing debates around IGD, the study addresses gaps in understanding by exploring the potential role of heightened stress and early depression as contributors to IGD. Building on growing evidence and theories such as the compensatory use theory by Kardefelt-Winther (2014), it investigates how individuals may turn to online gaming as a coping mechanism for underlying psychosocial issues

While existing quantitative studies reveal associations between avoidance coping, escape motives, and negative outcomes in gaming, this qualitative study aims to offer a more direct understanding from the perspective of affected gamers. By focusing on their personal stories, it seeks to complement quantitative data and enhance comprehension of the complex relationship between excessive gaming, stress, and mental health

My experience as a research student at the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½, especially within the Research Centre for Applied Psychology (RCAP), has been quite positive. I appreciate the collaborative and dynamic research environment, even in the context of remote learning. The support I've received, both in terms of academic supervision and access to facilities/resources, has been valuable. Overall, the university has provided a conducive and enriching atmosphere for my research endeavors.
