Summary:
This research will draw from and triangulate the current theories within the literature on meaningful physical activity, physical literacy, and human flourishing. It hypothesises that if researchers can source the meaning-making behind how we move (physical), connect (social), think (cognitive) and feel (affective) about movement and physical activity, they may be able utilise meaningful attachments and schemas to build and develop physical literacy and therefore human flourishing, using a strengths based approach. There currently lies limited exploration investigating meaningful experiences in active living environments, which brings about interest in operationalising meaningful physical activity experiences within the context of this PhD, but also implementing theory to practice. The thesis aims to facilitate in providing approaches to promote positive sustainable behaviours within prospective communities, using the new Sport England consensus statement on physical literacy, to promote human flourishing. The thesis will be the first piece of research which utilises Sport England鈥檚 new consensus statement on physical literacy to apply within practical settings, using evidence based recommendations. In this case, application will be within a local residential community. The thesis will become the first exploration for how we may shape and develop our active living spaces to promote meaningful physical activity experiences, physical literacy, and human flourishing.
