About the Research Centre for Applied Psychology (RCAP)
Director: Associate Professor Erica Cook
The School of Psychology research stands out for its primarily applied nature, conducting original studies that directly tackle real-world problems. Our mission is to advance knowledge that can bring about positive changes in local, national, and international communities, with a special focus on the most disadvantaged and vulnerable members.
We apply our expertise to develop innovative interventions for those in need and aim to expand our evidence base. We approach concepts and methods critically and aim to advance a psychological discipline that puts reflection, openness, and human welfare at its centre. We aim to develop a new generation of researchers and research-informed practitioners driven by healthy ambition and the desire to make a difference.
We have collaborated nationally and internationally with many universities, governmental agencies, and third-sector organisations. We have also attracted significant funding from prestigious bodies such as the National Institute for Health Research, the British Academy…
RCAP is home to three research pillars:
The Psychology of Health and Wellbeing pillar is a hub of collaborative and impactful research, operating on a regional, national, and international scale. Our research spans across the lifespan, aiming to deepen our understanding of the biopsychosocial determinants of health and wellbeing, and health behaviour.
The Brain, Cognition and Behaviour pillar boasts a wide range of interests and research activity among members with international research links. It fosters collaboration and enterprise across local communities, academic and industry fields in areas including memory, language, forensic psychology, virtual reality, cognition, and health.
The Social and Community Research pillar has a diverse research group producing both theoretical and applied social research contributions with an emphasis on the local community within the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½.
You can find more details about our research activity by looking at the profiles of our staff members and under the links themes and projects.
