Joanna Swanton

Lecturer in Midwifery

Joanna Swanton

I qualified as a midwife in 2013 having trained at The Rosie – Addenbrookes. Following this, I started work at St Bart’s NHS trust in Newham - East London for my preceptorship. I thoroughly enjoyed working in a busy, diverse London hospital, however when the opportunity arose, I returned to work at Addenbrookes as a band 6 community Midwife. My passion has always been for low risk care and the majority of my career has been spent in a community or birth centre setting.

After four years at Addenbrookes, I moved to my local trust - East and North Herts at the Lister Hospital. During my five years at Lister I worked across all areas, I also held a caseload specialising in young Mothers and women with mild-moderate mental health.

Prior to my career as a Midwife I was a dance teacher and have always felt passionate about teaching and supporting midwifery students. I feel privileged to teach midwifery as it is something that I am so passionate about. I also still work clinically when lecturing allows.

In my spare time, I run a non-profit organisation called A Little Something, that supports families in financial difficulty to prepare /provide for their newborn up to 18 months. It was founded in 2019 and continues to support families in North Herts and the surrounding area.
