Symposium on Knowledge(s) and expertise in participatory democracy

Christina Schwabenland gave a paper at a symposium on Knowledge(s) and expertise in participatory democracy at the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ of Jyväskylä, Finland, on 25 October 2017.

This one-day symposium invited researchers, policy-makers, practitioners and ‘lay-experts’ to discuss how new participatory arrangements alter and potentially challenge our notions of knowledge and expertise, and to consider the consequences of these redefinitions.

Key questions included:

  • How are ‘new’ forms of knowledge and expertise called upon in participatory arrangements?
  • How do participatory initiatives shape and challenge traditional notions of expertise?
  • What redefinitions of knowledge and expertise appear outside ‘invited’ forms of public participation?
